Home Health, Hospice PEPPER Retrieval Rates Approach 27, 60 Percent, Respectively –Annual Comparison Report Offers Insight into Key Risk Areas

Annually, the TMF Health Quality Institute (a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ contractor) issues Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Reports (PEPPERs) for hospice, home health, and a number of other Medicare-certified provider types.  The PEPPER Report provides organization-specific data for services/care patterns that may be potential risk areas for improper payment, and data at the state, Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) jurisdiction, and national levels for comparison.  PEPPERs for hospice providers are routinely issued in mid-April, while home health PEPPERs are issued in July.  Since hospices have received PEPPERs for a longer period of time than have home health agencies (and are issued earlier in the calendar year), hospice retrieval rates tend to run higher than those of home health agencies.  As of late August, following are the national retrieval rates:
