Please Help Home Care and Hospice Workers Affected by Hurricane Florence

The devastation caused by Hurricane Florence in North and South Carolina has stunned all of us at NAHC and left us wondering how we can help those affected by the storm. We know the thousands of people who work in home care and hospice in the Carolinas are dealing with almost inconceivable hardship and loss right now. And that won’t end tomorrow – recovery from this devastation will take months, at the very least.

One thing we know at NAHC is that home care and hospice workers are some of the finest human beings any of us will ever be lucky enough to meet. They have devoted their lives to caring for some of the most vulnerable people in the world. Now, it is time for the rest of us to reach out and lend a helping hand to these quiet, every day heroes. They need our help and we will not disappoint. Their need is great and so our response must be equal to the need.

The Association for Home & Hospice Care of North Carolina (AHHC of NC) and its charitable organization, the Hospice and Home Care Foundation of North Carolina (the Foundation), have established a fund for disaster relief for home care and hospice employees in North and South Carolina whose lives have been turned upside down by Hurricane Florence. Home care, home health and hospice nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, therapists, and administrators are picking up the pieces in their own lives while ensuring the well-being of their patients. Your tax-deductible donation could help ease the burden faced by so many of our NC and SC Home Care & Hospice workers.

All funds collected will be distributed directly to employees working in home care and hospice who are in need of assistance in the wake of Hurricane Florence. AHHC of NC and the Foundation will review applications for funds and determine distribution amounts based on need.

“The great peacemaker Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘Where There is Love There is Life’ and ‘The Best Way to Find Yourself is to Lose Yourself in the Service of Others.’ These words are a testament to the creed that home care, home health and hospice & palliative care staff live by daily in the service of patients and their families,” says AHHC of NC President and CEO Tim Rogers. “Now is the time to encircle one another, to lose ourselves in service, and to test our capacity to care for our peers. It is through these acts that we discover the true nature of our being and purpose, and the true essence of life and love.”

Love for our fellow human beings and a willingness to step up and care for those in need is absolutely central to the work of home care and hospice. Millions of Americans rely on the selfless devotion of home care and hospice workers. Now, they must be able to rely on us. We must not let them down. Please help now and do all that you can.
